My go-to smoothie

Hello!

Well it seems I am a total smoothie convert. I used to be all about the juice, mainly because I can’t stand things that are too milky and creamy, and also, I just can’t stand bananas (the smell, the taste, the texture – everything!) But, ever since I got the Ascension Kitchen green smoothies app and discovered that you need neither of those things, smoothies have taken on a whole new life for me. It wasn’t like it was rocket science to figure it out, but I think I just needed someone to put it in my face. The blender is also SO much quicker to clean than the juicer.

Even though the weather is still a bit chilly, I’ve really been enjoying having a smoothie most days.

This is my go-to smoothie recipe, which I usually put into one of these glass jars and drink on the way to work or when I get into work (I recycled them from these juices I used to buy at my local farmers market and they’re so handy!)

Blueberry, kale and hemp smoothie

Ingredients
  • ¾ cup almond milk
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 3 kale stems
  • ⅓ cup blueberries
  • 2 scoops hemp protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon acai berry (optional)
Instructions
  1. Blend your kale, water and almond milk for about 30 seconds before adding any ingredients (you want your kale to be truly blitzed as otherwise you can kind of taste the bits of it). Then, add your other ingredients and blitz again. Voila!

The exact recipe I use changes slightly, depending on how I feel, but this is the main deal. I’ve tried adding chia and linseed before, but to be honest, I swear the bits just end up glueing to the side of my blender!

Other things you can add are maca powder, flaxseed oil, coconut oil, other berries… the list goes on! Sometimes I’ll also add a few ice cubes to the mix as well to cool it all down a bit more so it stays nice and chilled by the time I get to work.

I’m also pretty fussy about my protein powders – I love hemp protein powder because of all the wonderful nutrition in it (great source of Omega-3’s and contains all essential amino acids, as well as good amounts of iron, calcium, vitamin e etc). I’ve also just invested in a container of Ezyprotein (just like probiotics and your greens, I think it’s healthy to mix it up a little, rather than sticking to the same one every time).

Do you have a favourite smoothie combo?
