I subscribe to the philosophy that the body is still detoxing in the morning, and so usually (except on the weekends when I go for pancakes, or mochi or life changing bread) I usually have something light on my body like fruit.
There are two people I know who subscribe to the same theory – Skinny Bitch (well actually this is two people), and Therese Kerr (Miranda Kerr’s mum). Essentially, the body is still trying to get rid of toxins at this time, so you don’t want it to be focusing all of it’s energy on digesting food. Fruit is usually the exception to this rule.
Some mornings I’ll just have an apple with almond butter, some mornings I’ll have an apple and some other fruit. I know, almond butter doesn’t quite fit the fruit-only scenario, but it does fill me up, and I think it is still a light breakfast choice.
Quite often though, I’ll just juice some vegetables. So many people put cucumber in their smoothies and juices, but I’ve always just thought that seemed weird until recently, and then I saw organic lebanese cucumbers at the farmers market and thought I’d give it a burl.
I juiced that first batch expecting it to taste quite average. Even when I poured it into my mug, I thought to myself ‘suck it up, Robyn, just drink it, it’s good for you’. So I did. And it tasted freaking awesome! Cucumbers are awesome!
In all honesty though, cucumbers really are awesome. They are one of the healthiest foods around. They contain an array of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, B, C and D, as well as calcium, magnesium and potassium. Due to their high water content, they are lovely and hydrating, and they have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. They also have silica with is great for your joints (as it strengthens connective tissue).
Lemon is the main man for alkalising your body which is important in the morning, and all the other fruits/ veggies in here are great for detoxing your body and boosting your health, making it a perfect morning time brekkie.
- 2 stalks of kale
- 1 lebanese cucumber
- 1 apple
- 3 strawberries
- ¼ lemon
- Juice the kale, cucumber, apple and strawberries, and then squeeze in the lemon juice.
